CURATED FOR GERRY
Hi Gerry,
Below is my interpretation of what aspects of a yacht are important to you based on our conversations and based on how you and your friends made use of the time on board the charter. Please let me know where I am off the mark or add anything that I may have missed. Rather than send you a ton of emails with information overload I thought it best to try getting it all on one mobile friendly, data-layered single page. I have limited this to five simply because we’re just getting started. We could look at hundreds of options and still have more yet to choose from. I think this is a good start though.
You stated that is important for there to be areas where your friends can socialize in three parts of the boat. The bow, the fly bridge, the aft deck, and the main salon area within yachts are the most popular places to gather.
Most of vessels in this size range of 60-70′ have crew quarters close to the owner’s “space” and/or have limited space for crew.
Most vessels will have space for several types of water sports like kayaks, fishing poles, paddle boards, jet skis. Regarding jet skis, most layouts in this size range force owners to choose between a dingy and a jet ski. It is worth noting that a dingy can be towed behind the boat if there isn’t enough room on the yacht itself.
Most vessels have a davit to raise and lower jet skis and/or a dingy. Others have a swim platform in the rear of the vessel with a davit and others have a swim platform that lowers into the water electronically like the Absolute. Swim platforms that lower are easier to operate with less crew and safer because with a davit a crew needs to be competent enough to lower it from the fly bridge without striking the vessel.
Most small vessels, 90′ or smaller, will not have a jacuzzi. I have included an 82′ Hargrave as an option that has a nice profile with a jacuzzi on the upper deck because you and your friends enjoyed the jacuzzi.
Rarely will a 60-80′ vessel have more than three staterooms and to my knowledge only the 68′ Absolute has four staterooms with crew quarters for two.
This is subjective. The Absolute could be considered flashy. The other options fall into the not too flashy category. Sunseeker, Pershing (definitely flashy), Azimut (possibly), and Ferretti (possibly) yachts could be considered flashy.
Chef and self prepared meals as well as room for server/bartender. Its nice to have space for a chef to cook and at times room for a helper or bartender.
Some yachts max out at low speeds, 8-10 knots. Higher speeds of course increase fuel cost but 14-17 is optimal for most yachts in terms of fuel burn.
- Catalina Island (Avalon) 40 miles away from Marina del Rey
- At 10-12 knots its 3.5 hours away.
- At 15 knots 2.5 hours away.
- At 18-20 knots 2 hours away.
- Malibu 13 miles away from Marina del Rey
- At 10-12 knots its 1.5 hours away.
- At 15 knots 1 hours away.
- At 18-20 knots less than an hour away.
The general rule of thumb is 10% of the vessel value to allocate towards cost of ownership as well as maintenance and repairs. Many factors dictate this cost though. The larger the yacht the higher crew cost. The older the yacht the higher repair and maintenance cost. The longer the yacht, the higher the slip fees. The more expensive the yacht, the higher the insurance premiums, etc. If you keep up with scheduled manufacturer advised maintenance in my experience its less than 10%.
